b. Washington, DC.
Lives and works in Atlanta, GA

The paintings of the last decade have been informed by my interest in specific place and an investigation into abstract expressionism; a simultaneous process of control and deliberate abandon.

I began the most recent series of works by painting what is in close proximity; my backyard and immediate environs. Development has finally hit my neighborhood and while that has eliminated many larger, older trees and vegetation, I have been surprised to find that the paintings from this change in landscape are some of my strongest. Evidently my intent and emotional response is a transformative process, for myself as much as it can be for the viewer.

David Abram suggests in his book, The Spell of the Sensuous, that “as the technology of writing…spreads through a previously oral culture, the felt power and personality of particular places begins to fade.” We can read these written stories anywhere, losing the original connection and primal energy to sites where they took place. In contrast, my task is to transpose that highly visceral involvement with nature and color into a painting that can be offered as a universal visual experience. How does place speak to us - and how do I as the painter communicate my response to this deep and fragile bond?

I want to portray the moment between the landscape as it lives in nature and at the point of man’s destruction – or transformation - of it. Documentation of place, before rural and remote areas are lost to urban development, is a key element and driving force to my work.

I grew up in Princeton, NJ and have lived in New England, Canada, San Francisco, the Midwest, southeastern Pennsylvania and recently returned to Atlanta where I lived from 1976 to 1997.
