b. Washington, DC.
Lives and works in Atlanta, GA

My paintings are informed by an interest in documentation of place, before our urban forests and old growth trees are lost to development. I have been painting an abstracted version of landscape in much the same vein since the early 1980s, when “urban growth” first threatened my home in the Poncey-Highland area of metro Atlanta. The Carter Center was then a field of kudzu and haven for homeless and the indigent.

The highly visceral involvement with nature in my work becomes a reminder of its importance in our everyday lives. How does place speak to us, and how do we communicate this deep and fragile bond?
I’m currently producing a body of work inspired by my region of metro Atlanta. I paint what is rapidly changing; bulldozers leveling woodlots, dry creek beds that combat runoff - all of the mundanities of daily living, surrounded by a natural world.

David Abram suggests in his book, The Spell of the Sensuous, that “as the technology of writing…spreads through a previously oral culture, the felt power and personality of particular places begins to fade.” We can read these written stories anywhere, losing the original connection and primal energy to sites where they took place. In contrast, my task is to transpose and create a universal visual experience.

There is humor and pathos in the paintings, a transformation out of destruction and profound ravages to the land. A particular Southern vernacular exists as a memento of how changes to our surrounding environment over time surfaces in my work. Communities and environments evolve, and their histories survive in disparate and incongruous mediums.

I grew up in Princeton, NJ and have lived in New England, Canada, San Francisco, the Midwest, southeastern Pennsylvania and recently returned to Atlanta where I lived from 1976 to 1997.
